I wish there was more of a conversation around the theme change and its cultural context with how Asian depictions have been handled here and i feel like im going yo be getting a ton of "its just a game!" And "why you have to make it about race" comments just for sharing how i feel.
#THE LAST BASTION SERIES 2018 UPDATE#
In their effort to update the game they did see the action of "Getting rid of everything thats Asian" as an improvement. While i dont believe that Repos is some sort of secret Asian hating publisher it does damper any enthusiasm toward Last Bastion. In addition there's the numerous whitewashing conversations centered around media (21 being the worst example). What added to the sting is that this was another example of boardgames losing their Asian inspired aesthetics in the name of mass appeal (see love letter and 7th Hero). Hearing about a 2.0 made me excited until I saw it was medieval fantasy which is one of the most overused themes in boardgame history. There was something really cool about seeing creatures from my cultural background that extended beyond the odd Dragon or evil samurai. I loved the monster design in this game, especially how it had hoping vampires. As an Asian board game fan its rare to see an Asian themed game ESPECIALLY when it dealt with the supernatural. One of the things i loved the most about Ghost Stories, was the theme.
